In this website, we highlight the academic strengths of the Department of Applied Mathematics and some of its significant contibutions to the University.

AMA has 42 academic staff working in three discipline groups: Applied Statistics and Financial Mathematics, Engineering and Computational Mathematics, and Operations Research and Applied Optimization. The Department offers high quality undergraduate programmes (BSc (Hons) in Investment Science and Finance Analytics and BSc (Hons) in Data Science & Analytics, Minor programme in Applied Mathematics, postgraduate programmes (MSc in Applied Mathematics for Science and Technology, MSc in Data Science and Analytics, and MSc in Operational Research and Risk Analysis), and Research Postgraduate Programme (PhD/MPhil ) in Applied Mathematics. AMA also provides service teaching in mathematics and statistics to other departments in the university, complementing students' majors and meeting students' needs. In 2018/19, AMA offers 29 service teaching subjects to 5721 students.

The Department encourages academic staff to conduct research that has high impact and important applications in engineering, economics, and science. Staff in AMA publish extensively in top level journals in applied mathematics and statistics, serve in the editorial boards of 34 major journals listed in Journal Citation Reports, and have 56 on-going RGC research projects supported by the Hong Kong Research Grant Council. We conduct joint research actively with excellent researchers in many prestigious universities/laboratories around the world. Moreover, AMA has strong regional connections with business and industry sectors. In the past few years, we have strengthened our collaborations on applied mathematics and financial mathematics with the Chinese Mainland via the CAS AMSS-PolyU Joint Laboratory of Applied Mathematics established by the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) Academy of Mathematics and Systems Science (AMSS) and PolyU and the PolyU-HKBU-SDU Joint Research Center on Financial Mathematics established by PolyU, Hong Kong Baptist University, and Shandong University. In October 2017, PolyU established the University Research Facility in Big Data Analytics, which is jointly managed by AMA and Department of Computing. The Department will enhance collaborative research efforts with our industry partners in the Greater Bay Area and other departments in PolyU and beyond.

This website highlights the academic strengths of the Department. I hope you will enjoy your visit online.
